OUR TRAINING PROGRAM
Starting Horses
Five Phases Farm specializes in starting and training horses for dressage, jumping, eventing and driving. Roger does an extensive amount of groundwork with both unstarted and started horses before he puts a rider on or hooks a carriage to them. He starts them by teaching each to lunge, has them wear the driving harness to help desensitize, a surcingle with bridle and side reins is the last step before he starts long lining.
Once they’ve finished all the groundwork successfully they begin their training under saddle. We start teaching every horse the fundamentals of dressage training. They learn how to accept the bit, move off the leg, forward at the walk, trot, and canter. Once they are doing these correctly we start hacking them outside of the ring and take them off the farm so they get comfortable being away from home.
As we continue their training it is our goal to make sure each horse enjoys their job by working outside of the ring, jump and/or driving them so they don’t become bored.
Dressage Training
We offer full training with Michelle and Tara. If you are wanting lessons on your horse or your horse needs training we can provide that. We will first determine where you and your horse are currently in your training, discuss goals and make a training plan. When it’s time for a monthly lesson from an International, Olympic rider and top clinician we go to Lars Petersen.
Driving Training
Roger starts young horses to drive and can train them for pleasure shows, combined driving and coaching. He is also available for lessons at the farm or at your place. Roger also helps with problem horses such as ones that have a history of running off, not standing while getting hitched to the carriage etc.
Jumping & Eventing Training
With Roger as the ground person, while Michelle rides, we can start your horse so they have the proper dressage fundamentals first. We will introduce them by jumping in an easy and fun way so there is no stress. If your horse and/or you need more advanced training we will first assess you and/or your horse and come up with a program and goals.
